Some of the most memorable moments in opera are to be found in this piece.
Butterfly is a grand tragic heroine. She begins her relationship with Pinkerton in child-like innocence.
This opera is a story of tragic faithfulness against a clash of cultures. A fragile girl is wronged by a man who does not comprehend the consequences of his philandering until it’s too late.
This is the ultimate “dramma per musica”, each note in this superbly lyrical score contributes to the development of storytelling and character.
From the instantly recognisable hopefulness of “Un bel di” to the anticipation of the famous “humming chorus”, the music pours forth its glorious invention unceasingly.
