Perth International Arts Festival and West Australian Opera present Otello, a co-production of Cape Town Opera, West Australian Opera, New Zealand Opera, Opera Queensland, State Opera of South Australia and Victorian Opera
O, BEWARE MY LORD, OF JEALOUSY!
IT IS THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER WHICH DOTH MOCK THE MEAT IT FEEDS ON
Otello’s famous first explosive moments describe the terror of a storm at sea. Iago, the embodiment of self-importance and arrogance, is fuelled by jealousy and rage as he is passed over for promotion to Captain and sets out to destroy Otello. Desdemona’s morality and her love for Otello are cast in doubt. Roderigo’s jealousy is used and abused. Layer upon layer of manipulation highlights how one person’s evil and selfish intentions impact many. Verdi’s magnificent score and Arrigo Boito’s dramatic libretto display power, poignant beauty and profound tragedy.
