Rigoletto is employed by the Duke, a callous playboy. He hates his job, and on a particularly bad day he takes a joke a little too far and he and the Duke are cursed for their antics by the outraged Count Monterone.
The curse weighs heavily on Rigoletto and he fears for the safety of his beautiful daughter, Gilda - but she has already fallen in love with the Duke. She is abducted by the Duke's henchmen, and when Rigoletto finds out he begins to plot the Duke's demise.
This emotionally charged drama, heightened by Verdi's musical prowess in this, his first great opera, broke with conventions of the time. He developed a wonderful series of music signatures highlighting the drama of each character. Enjoy an action packed City of Perth's Opera in the Park.
