Glorious melodies and passionate duets.
This opera, seen through the magic of the Romantic imagination of nineteenth century France, is based on the allure and fascination of the East and composed by Bizet when he was just 24 years old.
It is hard to imagine a more perfect setting for this opera than a summer night under the stars in Supreme Court Gardens, an ideal ambience for this tale of love and heroism.
The priestess Leïla loves Nadir, a fisherman, but it’s complicated by her vows and by Nadir’s friendship with his romantic rival Zurga and by Nourabad, an authoritarian high priest. The lovers escape certain death and elope to freedom aided by Zurga who overcomes his jealousy when he realises that Leïla once saved his life.
