This work came from the pen of a youthful Georges Bizet in 1863. It takes as its subject the traditional conflict between the priestess Leila’s love for Nadir and her sacred vows - the same conflict which informs Bellini’s Norma  - and quite a few other pieces. This production uses the conventions of theatre of memory to make a lucid case for the plot and to strengthen the dramatic line to make a convincing theatrical narrative.

This is an opera of youthful inspiration - with the undeniable stamp of the genius that was to give us Carmen. It is with this in mind that we have fielded a young and brilliant cast on the threshold of their professional careers. James Egglestone, now a regular and favourite performer with West Australian Opera, returns to sing the role of Nadir.  We welcome back former Young Artist Katja Webb for her debut in a principal role for West Australian Opera and with pleasure extend to Ollivier-Philippe Cuneo a warm welcome for his conducting debut with our company after his very successful seasons with Opera Australia. They are joined by the talented Andrew Moran, and another former Young Artist James Clayton.

Bizet’s gift for melody is everywhere apparent in this score - its colourings are exotic - its orchestration and harmony tell the story as effectively as its memorable tunes, so loved by the public, whose affection for the piece has secured it an enduring place in the top 20 operas of the repertoire.
