THE PEARL FISHERS: HISTORY

Opera in 1860s Paris was both highly regulated and strictly segmented. Firstly, there was what Verdi called The Big Shop: the Opéra, where spectacular operas were performed, and where reputations and fortunes could be made. Verdi and Wagner, Donizetti and Meyerbeer all launched themselves at this barricade, with varying success.
