Jan Stewart and Mario D’Orazio appointed to the board of West Australian Opera
West Australian Opera Chairman Terry Bowen announced the appointment of two new board directors following the Annual General Meeting of West Australian Opera held on Wednesday 29 April.
Mr Bowen was delighted to welcome Jan Stewart, recently retired CEO Lotterywest and Mario D’Orazio, Managing Director, Channel Seven Perth.
Jan Stewart has been a long standing advocate in the arts and brings her passion, commitment and business skills to the board. Mario D’Orazio offers marketing and media skills as well as a strong network and contacts including a harmony with Channel Seven Perth’s support of WAAPA with whom WAO works closely.
West Australian businessman Julian Burt was confirmed on the board following the retirements of banker Andrew Whitechurch and medic and businessman Dr Chris Denz.
At the AGM Deputy Chairman Andrew Pascoe thanked Mr Whitechurch and Dr Denz for outstanding service to the state opera company over the past several years. He said that the board was proud of the company and the milestone it had reached with the presentation of Otello as part of the Perth International Arts Festival in February. This represented a new model of co-operation between six companies in three countries in a coproduction arrangement between Cape Town Opera, New Zealand Opera, Opera Queensland, Victorian Opera, State Opera of South Australian and West Australian Opera and Mr Pascoe said the company had been pleased to welcome guests from the Cape Town Opera Chorus for this season.
At the AGM Mr Pascoe also reported that he was pleased that Tim Finn OBE had been commissioned to write a new work in collaboration with New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera and thanked the Department for Culture and the Arts for their investment in supporting this.
The new board appointees will join Mr Bowen, Deputy Chairs Andrew Pascoe and Catherine Ferrari and current directors Warwick Hemsley and Ingrid O’Brien in making up the Board of West Australian Opera.
“We look forward to working with the General Manager Carolyn Chard and the recently appointed Artistic Director, Brad Cohen to plan the celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary in 2017” Mr Pascoe said.
