City of Perth’s much anticipated Opera in the Park will be presented on Friday 6 March in Supreme Court Gardens. Rossini’s comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville is presented in association with West Australian Opera, Lotterywest and Healthway (with the message alcohol.think.again).

The plot revolves around Count Almaviva’s love for the beautiful Rosina and his determination to woo her without revealing his high status and wealth.  He is joined in this quest by Figaro, a young barber; and, through a range of outrageous antics, the pair manage to thwart the plans of Dr Bartolo, Rosina’s elderly guardian who has plans to marry Rosina himself.

This opera includes many well known musical highlights, including Figaro’s famous ‘Largo al factotum’ which holds iconic status, and is familiar to audiences through the repetition “Figaro!  Figaro!  Figaro!”.

James Clayton will sing the role of Figaro with Emma Matthews as Rosina and John Longmuir as Count Almaviva.  Douglas McNicol will sing Dr Bartolo, Andrew Collis will sing Basilio, Rosina’s music teacher,  and Fiona Campbell sings Berta, Rosina’s old governess. Mark Alderson is Fiorello, the Count’s servant.

West Australian Opera welcomes Richard Mills to lead the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and West Australian Opera Chorus, together with this all-star cast, in what promises to be an enthralling evening under the stars.

Set in Spain in the 18th century, the Barber of Seville is a prequel to Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro which will be presented in His Majesty’s Theatre in July this year.

City of Perth’s Opera in the Park will be simulcast to the Northbridge Piazza and regional venues in Geraldton, Bunbury, Esperance, Broome, Margaret River, Merredin, Port Headland, Carnarvon, Karratha and Moora.
