Opera in the Maj

It’s all about the drama! Attending an opera performance is exhilarating and unforgettable. Song, Music, Drama, Design and Stagecraft come together in spectacular fashion.

It is a performance genre that sees dramatic elements such as voice, movement, character, roles, relationships, time and space come together against a backdrop of musical masterpieces.

Don’t think you will understand?  All of our performances at His Majesty’s Theatre have surtitle (subtitle) screens to help you follow along.

Don’t know what to wear?  Jeans, ball gowns and anything in between are perfectly acceptable.

SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Benjamin Barker once had it all but tragedy, heartache and a brutal act of betrayal leads him to a dark road of despair.  Determined to avenge his loved ones he takes on a new identity as Sweeney Todd, a barber.  He meets the deranged pie-maker Mrs Lovett and together they embark on a twisted tale of destruction. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet  Street makes its debut with West Australian Opera in a razor-sharp melodrama featuring Stephen Sondheim’s haunting score which inspired Tim Burton’s Academy Award-winning film.

MACBETH

This is the story of the loyal General, Lord Macbeth who had sworn allegiance to the King of Scotland.  A group of witches reveal a prophecy that he will one day be King.  Enter Lady Macbeth who “by fair means or foul” is determined to see her husband in the throne.  Shakespeare’s gripping masterpiece comes to life in this brand new production featuring one of Verdi’s most dramatic scores. This is a tale of the supernatural, of greed, of guilt of lies, of murder, of betrayal.
