West Australian Opera Company’s first meeting was held on 8 April 1967 attended by Giuseppe Bertinazzo, Josee Bertinazzo, James Penberthy (composer), Verdon Williams, Dr. Werther, Mr and Mrs Earle Nowotny, Jon Ilbery, Eric Royston Prince, Carlo Stransky, Lloyd Masel (tenor), Betty Carter (Soprano), Lesley Perrin (Soprano), Alan Pearson (Baritone), and Ted Holding (Baritone).

West Australian Opera was constituted on the 18th July 1967 and the first annual general meeting was held with Frank Callaway being elected as President.

At the AGM on the 17th November a new executive committee was elected, the members included Vincent Warrener, Sir Thomas Wardle, Sir Frank Ledger, Alf W. Buttrose, Diva D’Orsogna and Hew Roberts who were later joined by Anthony van Toll and Charles Westrip.

WAO Company's first home, the Opera Centre in Mt Lawley was opened by Premiere John Tonkin. It housed the administrative staff along with a technical workshop, large rehersal space and wardrobe.

Benjamin Britten's Opera Albert Herring was presented in the Festival of Perth, establishing the company in the Australian Operatic Scene.

Vincent Warrener, Board Chairman since 1969, became the General Manager and Anthony Van Toll became Chairman. A new charter was ratified in August 1976 and four singers were employed on full-time contracts

West Australian Opera has been a resident company at His Majesty's Theatre for the last 37 years, this has allowed our artists to rehearse and perform in this beautiful Edwardian Theatre

Federal and State Government funding was secured after the release of the Nugent Report which was commissioned by the Federal Government. The report reviewed the major performing arts companies.

In 2003 Jack Bendat was appointed patron of the company. That year productions of The Merry Widow, Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci and The Abduction from the Seraglio were staged.
