YOUnity Project

Celebrating inclusion through art

YOUnity is a powerful new initiative that amplifies the voices of LGBTIQA+ young people living in regional and remote Western Australia.
Open to young people aged 13–24, this free program will reach 26 communities across the state, offering opportunities for storytelling through immersive arts, cultural activities, and wellness experiences.
At its heart, YOUnity is about creating a strong sense of belonging, pride, and connection.
West Australian Opera is proud to be part of this project and we are excited to announce that singer-songwriter Jude York has been commissioned to compose two original songs especially for YOUnity.
A statewide partnership supported by Healthway and led by North Midlands project in collaboration with Young Pride Network and key partners West Australian Opera and the Australian Museum and Galleries Association

About YOUnity

New Arts Wellness Program Gives Voice to LGBTIQA+ Youth in Regional WA

YOUnity is a free program, offered in 26 communities across the state. Co-designed with regional youth and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, the program consists of a two-part series:

1: Represent – Flags in Motion
Participants will design and create a personal flag that reflects their identity, journey, and values. The flags will be brought together from across the state and stitched together to create a large-scale collaborative artwork, symbolising unity across distance.

2: Our Stories – In Voice
Through writing, poetry, spoken word and drawing, participants will share their stories, which will provide the source material for two original songs composed by West Australian Opera.

The songs will echo the authentic voices of regional queer youth — powerful, real, ready to be heard.
