Esteemed Australian Director Bruce Beresford is just as familiar in the world of opera as he is in the world of cinema.
He has directed several productions for major opera companies and WAO's own Artistic Director Chris van Tuinen worked with him at Opera Australia on A Streetcar Named Desire which featured Yvonne Kenny, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Antoinette Halloran.
So when Bruce wanted to make a film in Perth, he reached out to West Australian Opera to film a section of the Dress Rehearsal for Rusalka and take footage from WAO's 2022 production of La traviata.
Join us for a pre-film screening conversation, where West Australian Opera's Artistic Director, Chris van Tuinen will share some insights into filming The Travellers’ pivotal opera moments; and his experiences working alongside director, Bruce Beresford. Chris will also explore the significance of Verdi's opera La traviata; which is central to the plot of the film.
Following the pre-screening talk, West Australian Opera's Jessica Blunt and Tommaso Pollio will perform one of La traviata’s most memorable arias; and you will also get a sneak peek at WAO's 2026 season.
